What I am reading- January

So I don't have a widget or gadget or whatever for my blog that list the books I am reading, I will try posting each month something about what I am into that month-reading, watching, etc.. Since I am not in a book club right now and TiVo is waiting to record new seasons (American Idol in January and Amazing Race in February and Alias is on hiatus) I don't think I would have much to post about, so I will just see how it goes.

This weekend I picked up the book Mommy Guilt. I have read about three chapters and it does seem to offer some good ideas but mostly it lets you know that is ok to not do it all, do it all well and that other people who look perfect aren't always. I will see how it turns out.

Discovery

"I have made you hear new things from this time. Even hidden things, and you did not know them." - Isaiah 48:6

My devotional yesterday discussed this verse and related it to genetic research which is my area of research at my job at GSK. Each generation of scientists discover "hidden things" it just seems to be at a faster pace these days with the growth of technology. There are so many things we could never uncover all of them in one lifetime. It is neat to think that God kept these things to himself but does allow us to "discover" them!

Working Out

So it is that time of year for new year's resolutions. Almost every January for the past ten years with the exception of 2003 and 2005 when I was pregnant. I have "resolved" to lose weight by the summer by doing this diet or that. More years than not I have either never really got the diet started or quit. So this year, I am going to try something new, working out.

Exercise is not my favorite, but I know it is something I should do. I joined the Ladies workout Express in Durham. It is near work so I could go on my lunch and right beside our store A2Z so it might be possible to workout while James was at the store with the kids. The workout is designed to last 30 minutes by doing different stations that mix 30-40 sec intervals of strength training with aerobic exercise. So unlike a class that is maybe an 8 week commitment, joining a gym is a 2 year commitment in my case with payments every month. Hopefully, that will be a motivation to go since I am already paying for it. We will see. I think I will feel most comfortable in this gym since it has nice surroundings, is ladies only and there is no class or teacher to have to keep up with. You do your workout yourself and people are not watching to see if you mess up. Hey it is only 30 minutes right? I can handle that (I think). Today (if work schedule permits) is my first day to get measured (eeeehhhhhhhh) and work out.

As far as diet, I can't decide what to do. I know I can lose weight if I strictly follow some of the popular plans like Zone or Atkins but I don't know if I want to. Those are so hard to stay on for a long period of time after you quit dropping the pounds. Maybe with the exercise, I can eat more things I like and not diet so much. Who knows? I also entered the 5 on 5 diet challenge for WRAL but it has not started yet. If I tried that plus the gym who knows what the results could be!

Hello it's me from 2006!

Welcome to 2006! So far it's been much like most of 2005 busy and a little frustrating. Holiday break was so great and relaxing to be with my family, get the house clean, do some cooking and have fun. But just one week into the new year and it is back to business as usual with crazy busy work schedule for me and James and the kid's sometimes crazy sleeping schedule. Last Friday the living room and kitchen were already in a state of disaster after just being back at work for not even a whole week! But we are doing better trying to stay on top of the chores and got the kitchen cleaned and got started on the living room this weekend. It is Monday and I already can't wait until Friday!

I hope to get holiday photos posted soon but we have been having trouble with the coppermine program that we use on our gallery pages.
